I'm not a fan - correlation should never imply causation

I am a professor and had to use this textbook for my course, as it was chosen by my department. I had previously used the Berk developmental text and much preferred it over this one. I found that sections of this text were not well written (attending to the trees and not the forest, so to speak, so the reader has lost the main point) and some of the information actually conflicted with information in the Berk text. Throughout the text, they imply that correlation means causation, which is a major pet peeve of mine. In other words, just because research finds that two variables are related (such as IQ and parental involvement, for example), doesn't mean that one variable causes the other, unless you have a true experimental design, and the majority of studies cited are only correlational. Most students aren't going to know this, so they read the text thinking that certain factors cause certain outcomes, which just isn't true. Human development is more complex than that, and causal factors can rarely be separated from other factors. I recommend the Berk text over this one.

The material for the most part was fine. Chapters weren't too long but OH MY GOD would the author not shut up about her damn personal life! It's a friggin textbook, not your facebook status! Constant references to her dumb kids, and even dumber grandkids, and oddly passive aggressive jabs at people she went to elementary school with. If you're reading this, Kathleen Berger: I HATE YOU.

Poor Supplemental Materials for Professors

The book itself is great, incorporating various aspects of human development (e.g., biological, cognitive, and social). However, the powerpoints that come with this book are downright awful. I've had to redo every single chapter's powerpoint because they don't reflect what the chapter covers. Certainly an oversight by the publisher.
