Dr Stephen F. Bush, General Electric Global Research, USA
Stephen received the B.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, the M.S. degree in computer science from Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Kansas, Lawrence.  He is currently a Researcher at General Electric Global Research, Niskayuna, NY. Before joining GE Global Research, he was a Researcher at the Information and Telecommunications Technologies Center (ITTC), University of Kansas. He has been the Principal Investigator for many DARPA and Lockheed Martin sponsored research projects including: Active Networking (DARPA/ITO), Information Assurance and Survivability Engineering Tools (DARPA/ISO), Fault Tolerant Networking (DARPA/ATO), and most recently, Connectionless Networks (DARPA/ATO), an energy aware sensor network project.

Psychoanalysis and Queer Theory

This is perhaps my favorite work in the growing corpus of queer theory. While much of the discipline has become sedimentations of regurgitated contentions about 'culturally constructed subjectivities,' Dean argues clearly and convincingly for a social theory which does not reduce desire to historical variability. Desire, he reminds us, is the failure of discourse, not its unequivocal success. With this as his starting place, Dean suggests that what we locate in psychoanalysis is neither some return to an isolated self independent from a social or linguistic context nor a culturally-formed subjectivity reducible to that context. Reading desire as fundamentally recalcitrant to social discourses that are always trying to grasp it, it emerges in his work as inherently disruptive or transgressive, as necessarily queer. Whether he is working with Freud's concept of the death drive as an explication of contemporary social responses to AIDS, elucidating Lacan's 'object a' as the inevitable interlinking of the desirable with the abject, or demonstrating why a model of the unconscious is necessary for grasping the fantasies that undergird our culture's ideas about gay men, Dean cogently argues for the rich potential that psychoanalysis contributes to our understanding of sexuality and society.

Shahrokh M. Saudagaran Shahrokh Saudagaran PhD, is the Gary E. and James A. Milgard Endowed Dean at the University of Washington Tacomas Milgard School of Business. He is Secretary General of the Asian Academic Accounting Association and Past-President of the American Accounting Associations International Accounting Section. In 2002, the Japanese Association of International Accounting Studies awarded him a lifetime honorary membership in recognition of his contributions to international accounting. In 2004, he received the American Accounting Associations Outstanding International Accounting Educator Award. His research on the impact of international accounting diversity on global listing decisions and on financial reporting in emerging capital markets, particularly those in the Asia-Pacific region, has been published in the top accounting, finance and international business journals.
