Easy to read, highly useful

Given that, unlike many frustrating classes where your $200 book ends up being a $200 paperweight, the class I took was centered on this book, it was extraordinarily useful. The chapters are fairly short and concise, the vocabulary easy to find and understand, and overall, it made what could have been a very tedious class into a much more bearable one. Would recommend to anyone.

I absolutely love this book on kindle. If you shrink the text, it resizes to fit on the screen. If you enlarge the figures and tables, they are still clear and you can read them clearly.

I wish the answers to the chapter questions had been placed somewhere so that I would know if I have the right answers when I'm viewing questions on the Kindle.

Pretty good, but

Not quite done with this one easier, but it gives pretty good practice labs for you to do to gain much needed experience. The only problem is that most people and even a lot of classrooms do not have the type of equipment necessary to complete these labs to the T.

About the Author
Sam Carrington lives in Devon with her husband and three children. She worked for the NHS for 15 years, during which time she qualified as a nurse. Wanted to like it...

I was actually really looking forward to reading this book. It sounded like exactly the kind of story I love, a "gripping psychological thriller" (although I do hate it when they put it in the title) but unfortunately in this instance it failed to deliver for me.
So the book blurb intrigued me and the social media buzz about it was considerable, but it wasn't far into the story that the problems become apparent. First, most of the dialogue doesn't ring true, and characters ask themselves dozens upon dozens upon dozens of introspective questions, which was a very odd technique employed by the author and slowed the book down in my opinion.
That being said the premise of this book is a good one. Your daughter is brought home one night by the police and she can’t remember anything that happened the night before past a certain point. The police had found her wandering around an area not usually frequented by her or her friends and mumbling incoherently. One of Sophie’s friends is missing and she isn’t being very helpful to her parents or the police. Does she know what happened? Is she hiding something from her parents?, the police?
This is the story of a mother and daughter who basically make all of the wrong choices right from the beginning of this incident. Sophie’s mother, Karen, is basically home bound after suffering an attack herself some time in the past. She is an emotional wreck and doesn’t know how to deal with her daughter or her husband for that matter. You would think that between the mother, father and daughter one of them would come to the conclusion that calling the police is the right thing to do, but that isn’t the case.
I’m starting to think that maybe I’ve just read way too many really well executed psychological thrillers so it’s rare that I’m truly gripped and horrified. While there were certain aspects of Saving Sophie that I liked, I had just as many overall issues. I will say that I would be interested in seeing what Sam Carrington writes next and that I can definitely see the appeal for some people. For me it's probably a 2.5 stars but I'll give it 3 stars as it's a debut and I love supporting authors.

Middling plot and writing

I've read many a thriller and this one was more disappointing than gripping. The plot did have many a twist and a turn, but it felt contrived rather than artful and truly suspenseful. The characters were one-dimensional, although I did appreciate the creative changes in narrator and point of view to introduce the main twist.

A Gripping Disaster

This convoluted plot is filled with the most dysfunctional characters who, faced with common sense, always choose complete stupidity. The key description for this book is "Depressing". An agoraphobic mother with a daughter whose best friend is murdered tries to "protect" her daughter from a murderer by doing what? Lying to the police? Lying to her husband? Are all English family dynamics this wretched? The unsatisfying ending leaves you with so many questions. The main one being "Did the author lose her pen and just give up on the ending and walk away?" This book is soul-less. Walk away from it.

The most succinct, definitive guide I've found for every aspect of quantitative usability testing!

As a practitioner in the usability field, I have come to depend on this guide for my usability testing. It tackles some long held best practices (i.e. - Do I only need to test with 5 users?) and arms you with the information necessary to make an educated decision about whether 5 users is enough based on what your trying to accomplish with the test.

It succinctly answers probably EVERY question I've ever had about performing quantitative usability tests, and answers some I didn't know I should be considering. I can quickly find the answer I'm looking for (because it's organized by "questions") and not lose valuable time during a project.

After having this booklet a while, I became (in full disclosure) big fan of the authors website devoted to "measuring usability" and look forward to his weekly blogs. ([...])

I can't emphasize enough how crucial this guide has been for me and the teams I've worked with. I bought several copies and gave them out to others on our Usability Testing team so we could use it as our "Playbook".

A work of literary art!

This is an excellent and engrossing novel that will captivate and draw you right into the story. On an early winter morning just before daybreak, three men hear a loud noise similar to a car backfiring. At first they dismiss it as just that, but it turns out to be a fatal shot that kills a farmer named Lloyd Wilson. The protagonist in the story was friends with the deceased man's son, Cletus. Using newspaper clippings, memories, and imagination, he tries to reconstruct the dramatic events that led to the shooting. Through the use of imagery, William Maxwell creates a story that is vivid in its depictions of rural life and the excruciating emotions people endure as a result of choices they make. This book takes the reader on a journey where one feels like a part of the world these people inhabit. The descriptive and evocative writing helps us to understand their pain and anxiety as we watch them live their lives. This is a terrific book and a great introduction to the literary talents of William Maxwell. Highly recommended!

A good book

A good book that is well written anti would recommend you read this this short novel. The story is about how events of a single day affect the narrator. Also the events of the day that is a murder affect the narrators school friend and they loose contact for many years. The book deals with the friendship of two men and then they fall out and never speak after one of the men has an affair with the others wife. This basic story occurs again and again through history.

Heart-Breaking

Maxwell has always been known as a very pure writer - honest sentiments in concrete images. Take this line from 'So Long, See You Tomorrow' about children sleeping in a quiet winter night as an example: 'sleeping the sleep of stone'.
Same for the book on the whole: a straight-forward and concise record of a painful childhood + a convincing and sympathetic account of what could have happened in the tragic murder/suicide that took place in the book. In the pages depicting Maxwell's childhood, you see images of the child agonizing over the death of his mother, the loss of a normal childhood, the bitterness against his father and a mixture of all these unresolved feelings which the grown up narrator narrates with great immediacy. The pictures are particularly heart-breaking as the writing is very subdued - everything is described for what it is and the author, while expressing his feelings directly, simply state what he feels without exaggeration. It is the kind of autobiographical writing that makes you understand why one writes autobiography and why all of us grieve over certain things that we think we've let go, or constantly hope we'll let go: some things will always be there, down deep, once they happen.
The fictional account of the murder/tragedy echoes Maxwell's story: how everyone has a heart and a right to their feelings; how we all get trapped in situations we cant control and break someone's heart or gets heart-broken. In a way, writing this story seems to be a way of coming to terms with things for Maxwell- to get over the bitterness against things gone wrong by understanding the complexities and inevitability of some situations. One striking thing about this piece of writing is that it's highly dialogic: like in the universe in Anna Karenina, everyone in this fictional world has a right to be understood. There's a reason why someone becomes the person s/he's become and why s/he's done what s/he's done. Even the most unsympathetic story (on the surface) has his story that may be sadder than everyone else's.
In the end it's an extremely well-written work - a very good example for students of creative writing in particular. The last thing I'll say about this book is its title. A line from the dialogue in the book itself, it symbolizes that line between childhood and adolescence/adulthood (when one's forced to drastically grow up in an extreme circumstance). One crosses this line and enters the world of traumatic loss, in which we have no choice but to accept and endure pain. As wound souls we forever look back at that other carefree world with nostaglia - a brilliant title and immensely geniune emotions.

About the Author
Marc Abrahams writes the "Improbable Research" column for the Guardian and is the author of This Is Improbable. He is an editor of the science humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research and a founder of the Ig Nobel Prizes, which are presented annually at Harvard. A monthly guest on NPR's nationally syndicated Science Friday, Abrahams and the Igs have been covered by The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Scientific American, and numerous other outlets. He and his wife, Robin, a columnist for The Boston Globe, live in Cambridge, MA.

More Laughter in Awed Amazement

WTF research rides again in this second installment on improbable science. Because this book is so similar in style, etc., as the prior one, my review of “This is Improbable”, applies to this one as well. So, I have included it below, with appropriate adjustments in square brackets.

“To think that serious research was done (and most likely continues to be done) on the topics outlined in this book just boggles the mind. Fortunately, the author has such a way with words that reading about these works is an absolute pleasure, which would not likely be the case if one were to read the original papers. On average, each work of research is described in just one to two pages. These are grouped into [in this case ten] chapters, each of which has its own particular topical slant [but most of which, in this case, focus on various parts of the human body]. Once again, this book’s most important feature, in my view, is the author’s continuous tongue-in-cheek and often absolutely hilarious summaries of the research. His careful choice of words to suit each topic is absolutely priceless. Despite the fact that I found some of the research summaries to be rather uninteresting, in many of the other cases I laughed to the point of having tears in my eyes. And it’s mainly for these many prize winners that I gave this book a perfect score. All in all, because the author has ensured that the book is devoid of specialized jargon (unless included for effect) anyone looking for laughs can enjoy this book tremendously, while, as a bonus, learn about how some hard-earned research money is being spent.”

Since I'm a long-term subscriber, I've read them before, but still it's fun to have them collected.
