Considering Conventional Gear? Read This First!

This book was recommended to me by a flight instructor who specializes in conventional (taildragger) instruction. I read it in a few nights and understand why the instructor felt it to be foundational.

Plourde (now deceased) knew what he was talking about and makes the basics very accessible and more than slightly entertaining. His proofreader should have been fired, but if you're reading this for grammar and punctuation, you're missing the point.

Through the use of diagrams, stick models, great stories and confessions, Plourde makes honest comparisons between taildraggers and the now-more-common nose-gear-equipped aircraft, and cites the advantages (and disadvantages) of each. He even goes into the some of the quirks of some of the taildraggers with which he had experience, to make it clear not every taildragger handles like every other.

Every pilot and instructor will gain something from the book, particularly about the proper way to deal with crosswinds - even in tricycle gear aircraft. And all will gain respect for skilled taildragger pilots.

This book is full of information about releasing emotions using essential oils. However, I was wanting more content about 'why' the essential oils worked, such as the phytochemicals involved. I initially purchased it in Kindle form for my iPad. There is so much cross referencing that I ended up purchasing it in paperback as well.

Disappointed

This book was not as nearly as helpful as I would have liked. The same information repeated multiple times. I thought it would be a good book to have so that I could look up emotional uses of oils suggested by a Zyto scan, but it didn't work well for me like that. For example, Ledum came up on a Zyto scan. All this book told me is that Ledum is a "Heart" oil and is something that might support healthy blood pressure. I knew that from my Essential Oil Pocket Reference. I really tried to get something useful out of this book but I came up short.

Thought provoking and emotional

This book is based on the facts that changed the lives and lifestyles of the German people as Hitler led them into WWII, some blindly, some willfully allowing the changes. I found myself living in the mind and heart of a young American girl trapped there, finding herself engulfed in the conflict of her emotions and Christian values as she watched the changes in people she loved. I could see many correlations to what's happening in America today and it made me examine my own strengths and weaknesses and how prepared I am as a Christian to deal with the same controversies and changes. I truly enjoyed reading this book. It is one of the best and well written books depicting this era. The book has suspense, romance
and tells the story of a young woman out of her element doing wonderful human acts of kindness. Strong in her christian beliefs, it truly is an inspiration to be shared.

Swensen has been the chief investment officer for the past 14 years at Yale University, where he is responsible for managing and investing more than $6 billion of the university's endowment assets and investment funds. Realizing an annual return of more than 16 percent on his investments, Swensen has added more than $2 billion to Yale's coffers, and his consistent track record has attracted the notice of Wall Street portfolio managers. Here Swensen provides a brief history of endowment funds and explains the purpose of endowment accumulation and the goals for institutional portfolios. One of the strategies behind his success has been to diversify asset classes and move beyond a reliance on domestic marketable securities. David F. Swensen is the chief investment officer of Yale University and the bestselling author of Pioneering Portfolio Management. He serves on the boards of TIAA, The Brookings Institution, Carnegie Institution, and Hopkins School. At Yale, where he produced an unparalleled two-decade investment record of 16.1 percent-per-annum returns, he teaches economics classes at Yale College and finance classes at Yale?s School of Management. Mr. Swensen lives in New Haven, Connecticut.

Truly unique insight into institutional portfolio management

Swensen's book is a must-read for endowment managers and other institutional investors, particularly those who take a fund-of-funds approach (as does Yale, where Swensen is Chief Investment Officer). Swensen aptly lays out the investment policy that has enabled Yale to consistently outperform other U.S. endowments. As Yale's CIO, Swensen has set a target portfolio allocation that departs significantly from the still heavily U.S. equity and debt-focused strategy of most endowments. Swensen's approach includes a large allocation to asset classes that are not highly correlated to the U.S. public equity market. He outlines these "alternative" classes in his book, giving the reader an excellent view of how alternative investments can increase risk-adjusted portfolio returns.
Perhaps the biggest contribution of Swensen's book, however, is the debunking of myths that still lull fiducaries into making the wrong decisions, for example when it comes to picking investment managers. Swensen advises against chasing managers who have performed well simply because of their past performance. If attributes such as personal integrity and the right fee structure are lacking, solid past performance can become a liability, not an asset. Swensen describes the example of private equity firm KKR-- after tremendous early successes, the flood of investor capital into KKR enabled the firm's partners to set up a fee structure that ensured big payoffs for themselves even if their funds underperformed. This is just one of many valuable lessons the reader will draw from Swensen's book.

Essential reading for endowment stewardship

This survey of endowment investing offers an incisive framework for how to think about investable assets of charitable institutions. The value of the book is that Swensen has thought long and hard about how endowment investing differs from personal wealth management and how those differences ripple through almost all aspects of overseeing and implementing endowment investments. As the chair of an endowment investment committee and the author of the Endowment Stewardship blog, I find all of Swensen's insights valuable, but especially his chapters on endowment purposes, investment and spending goals, investment philosophy and investment process. [...]Also, if you're an individual investor trying to copy Yale, this book will explain why you're wasting your time.

David Swensen reveals many insights available only from experience which are valuable for individuals and boards responsible for guiding large portfolios. I wished for more detail regarding the manager selection guidelines and asset allocation/reallocation criteria however we must respect that this information is proprietary.

About the Author

Jia Yi Chow is currently the Assistant Dean (Degree Programme) at the Office of Teacher Education and a member of staff at the Physical Education and Sports Science Academic Group at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His primary research area is in nonlinear pedagogy, which is underpinned by key theoretical perspectives from dynamical systems and ecological psychology. His other research interests include examining multi-articular coordination and visual search strategies captured within sports expertise. Jia Yi works closely with the Physical Education and Sports Teachers Academy (PESTA) at the Ministry of Education, Singapore, and also the Singapore Sports Institute.

Keith Davids is Professor of Motor Learning at the Centre for Sports Engineering Research, Sheffield Hallam University, UK. He currently holds the position of Finnish Distinguished Professor at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He has held professorial positions in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and Finland. His research in ecological dynamics investigates constraints on emergent coordination tendencies in athletes and sports teams. These key ideas have been integrated into a nonlinear pedagogy, informed by his work on motor learning design in sport. He currently supervises doctoral students from the UK, France, Finland, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand. He has worked with elite sport development agencies including the New Zealand South Island Academy, the Queensland Academy of Sport, the Australian Institute of Sport, Diving Australia, Cricket Australia and the English Institute of Sport.

Chris Button works at the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences, University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. His research interests include fundamental movement skill development and water safety. Chris also coaches (football) and provides a skill-acquisition consultancy for a number of sports in New Zealand. Chris is an executive committee member of the Australasian Skill Acquisition Research Group (ASARG).

Ian Renshaw is based in the School of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. His research interests are in ecological dynamics and nonlinear pedagogy with particular emphasis on the development of sporting expertise. Ian is currently Head Coach of Toombul DCC in the Brisbane Grade Cricket competition. Ian is also an executive committee member of the Australasian Skill Acquisition Research Group (ASARG).
