Great parent/kid book to read together

My 11 yr old daughter loves this series and asked me to read it with her. I found myself reluctantly enjoying these books. I like the hidden morality lessons and the mythological component, which has inspired her to learn about the Greek gods independently. There is a romantic component between the characters which I could do without, but it's all PG and nothing too hot and heavy. Violence is a component of the books but it is limited and not graphic at all.

Branko Ristic is a senior research scientist in the Tracking and Sensor Fusion Group at the ISR Division of DSTO, Edinburgh, Australia. In 2000 he was awarded the Anglo-Australian postdoctoral fellowship by the Royal Academy of Engineering, London. Good book

This a really good book for someone who is familiar with the Kalman filter, and wants to learn alternatives, particularly the particle filter. The first section provides a very concise introduction to nonlinear filtering, then a good derivation of the particle filter. The second section shows may different tracking applications that can use a particle filter and discusses different variations of the basic algorithm in relation to the application.

Excellent Intro to Particle Filtering

Particle filtering is a powerful method for nonlinear, non-Gaussian state estimation. Having worked in the area for several years, I would say that this book is one of the best introductions available. Unlike other books on the subject which are highly theoretical, this one is steeped in down-to-earth language. Besides giving a very good tutorial overview, it considers a number of practical applications with a separate chapter devoted to each. Studying these help a lot in learning how to apply the filter. I recommend this book highly.

For Adults who like the MAX Versions

I read stories in the MAX series I wouldn't if they were presented in the regular venue. For Adults with a look at the character we always wonder about in the regular stories presented for younger readers. I liked this series and I look forward to another one dealing with The Punisher again. I don't think anyone will ever surpass the way Garth Ennis presented the Character.

Pippa is not reinventing the wheel for entertaining

As the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa Middleton is in an unenviable situation. In many ways, she cannot win and it is unfortunate that to some, she will always be known as the only maid of honor to ever wear a flattering dress. Never judged on her own efforts, but on the media and public perception of her. Celebrate: A Year of Festivities for Families and Friends, is her attempt to change that.

Given her low profile prior to the royal wedding, Celebrate could be viewed as a premature effort. However, she's not the first person to jump on the bandwagon of her own notoriety nor will she be the last. To Pippa's credit, she acknowledges this in the introduction to Celebrate. She has the opportunity and she's taking advantage of it. By admitting this she makes it redundant for those who scoff at her efforts. Now who is being unoriginal?

Several reviews for this book have criticized Pippa for stating the obvious: 'ice goes great with drinks', 'a turkey at Christmas time is good for large gatherings'. Yes, it's true but let's be honest, even Martha Stewart falls back on 'Pumpkins add to the festive atmosphere of Halloween', 'Hearts make perfect Valentines' and 'Easter egg hunts are fun'. What Pippa does add to the field is her youth. Like her sister, she makes going the extra mile fashionable. Thus giving twenty-somethings options other than beer, wine, tortilla chips and brie cheese trays for their own parties.

Divided by seasons, Pippa presents crafts, recipes, nostalgic/traditional games and charming tidbits of trivia appropriate to the occasion. She also offers small glimpses into how her family celebrated events like Easter and Mothers Day. While her tips for building bonfires may not apply to most of her readers, some of the game instructions are hard to follow (Conker fights?) and hanging donuts from trees may be an attempt for the brave, her instructions for creating Christmas decorations and place settings using simple items can be for those willing to make the effort. Very reassuring for craft-challenged people like me.

With Celebrate, Pippa Middleton is not reinventing the wheel for entertaining. Instead her book is a fine attempt at reinterpreting it.

A failure in editing

Pippa Middleton took a lot of flack for her book, but as an editor myself, I believe that the flaw is on the editorial side. The basic set-up of the book (by seasons and traditional British events) is useful. I enjoyed the Burns Night section, plus other tidbits like how to make a "Christmas cracker."

Unfortunately, the book is bloated, with equal weight given to the mundane and the interesting. I understand that Pippa wanted to publish an accessible book, but it's almost never a good idea to talk down to the reader. Martha Stewart gets away with it because she's Martha Stewart; i.e., she has good reason to assume her readers can't live up to her example. In Pippa's case, I don't get it. Bobbing for apples, capture the flag, turkey for Christmas?

If I were editing the book, I'd suggest the following organization within sections:

* First, a simple list of the traditional British ways of doing things, without the play by play of every familiar game, decoration, or menu item. We can cut out paper hearts for Valentines and apply glitter without instructions, thanks.

* Full instructions for original/unusual ideas only. These are good as is but get lost among pages of "tie balloons to chairs and hang streamers."

* A feature on events that Pippa actually made special. In her Guardian article, she mentioned throwing a white-clothing-only party, a Scandinavian-themed party, and others. Why aren't those in the book? We want to read about how she *actually* parties, not how she wants the little people, I mean readers, to party.

* A smattering of only the most special and personal recipes. This is the Internet age after all. Does Nigella Lawson or Ina Garten already supply a recipe for it? Free? Online? Then we don't need to read yours unless it's something amazing.

* Finally, suggestions for how to develop new traditions. For people who aren't interested in a Burns Night, why not suggest choosing a beloved writer from your own culture and planning some complementary dishes to serve alongside a fireside reading? What else can go in a Christmas cracker? What other traditional dances should we try to revive?

Overall, I enjoyed parts of this book, but I finished feeling a bit duped. Maybe Pippa truly spends her life as a character in a 19th century novel, complete with reel dancing, lawn games, and bicycling to picnic locales, never a cell phone or computer in sight. I'm suspicious there's a lot more yachting, skiing, Prada shopping, and hobnobbing, though. Too bad. The truth would have made for a better book.

A comprehensive guide for home parties

Ms. Middleton's book does an excellent job of providing accessible recipes and easy to make crafts for any reader who is planning a home party.

This purpose of this book is to help a host plan a fun and thoughtful event for a small group of close friends. This book is not a blueprint for multi million dollar events, and it is clearly presented to be no such book. It is, however, my new go-to reference for any seasonal gathering I host.

One major benefit of this book is that is considers both children's and adult's activities ideas. Since most families consist of members ranging in age, it is very appropriate for family party planning.

Everything from the photography to the paper choice has been carefully curated in this book. Excellent book, I can't wait for a follow-up from Ms. Middleton.

About the Author
In the early 1970s, James Pool traveled extensively in Germany, interviewing many former Nazis who actually helped finance Hitler or were personally close to him. He also interviewed Allied intelligence officers and surviving slave laborers who worked for German companies. He has BA and MA degrees from the University of Cincinnati. Mr. Pool is also the author of "Who Financed Hitler: The Secret Funding of Hitler's Rise to Power, 1919-1933, " now completely revised and updated, and available in trade paperback from Pocket Books.

It wasn't all beer and bratwurst

During the Second World War, Hitler's Wehrmacht earned the reputation as being one of the mightiest armed forces the world has ever seen. The effort that went into manning, arming, equipping, and training a force that grew in size to over twelve million men between 1935 and 1945 was truly colossal, and with men such as Albert Speer in charge of the war effort, nothing seemed to have been left to chance.

Overlooked by modern historians, though no less vital to the early successes of the Third Reich, was the mundane challenge of feeding such a huge number of men. Whether eating in home garrison mess halls or lining up at a remote Gulasch-Kanone (field kitchen) somewhere in Russia, Italy, France, the Balkans or North Africa, German troops had to be fed three times a day. Not only fed, but well fed, with proper attention paid to food preparation and preservation, vitamins and nutrients, and last but not least, palatability. This topic, at best, has been only tangentially covered in the historiography of the war and has long been begging for the attention it deserves. With the publication of LTC (retired) Jim Poole's book, Wehrmacht Rations of WWII (Schiffer Military Publishing, Atglen, PA 2010), that gap has now been filled by what will become the standard reference work on the subject.

Not merely a survey on how the Wehrmacht fed its men, Poole's book also focuses on what they were fed and how much of it they entitled to in their daily ration. In addition to describing these mundane matters, the author brilliantly expounds upon the individual components of the ration, using a little-known US Army scientific study performed immediately after the war using captured German rations. This study, carried out by the US Army's Food Container Institute in 1947, evaluated over 100 items in the German ration, from bread products, to meats, candies and even coffee and tea, including the much-lamented Ersatz coffee, produced from a mixture of chicory and other foul coffee "replacement" materials. Just as important as the food items themselves were the methods and materials used to package and preserve them, including various types of tin cans, cardboard, cellophane, glass and wooden containers. A collector of these packaging materials, Poole scoured the attics and antique shops of Europe and has included hundreds of photographs of the actual items, gleaned from both his collection as well as from those of dozens of his fellow collectors.

Rounding out this truly groundbreaking book is a detailed and surprising coverage of other exotic German military food items, such as arctic survival rations, special rations for tank crews and paratroops, alcoholic beverage containers, and even the Wehrmacht's famous high-energy chocolate candy, Scho-Ko-Kola. Next to the German Luger pistol and the Iron Cross, this chocolate, packed in a trademark cylindrical can, was one of the most prized items favored by G.I. souvenir hunters. Poole leaves nothing to chance, providing intriguing details and facts about virtually every item in the German ration. Though German troops may have longed for cast-off G.I. "K" and "C" Rations by the end of the conflict, for most of the war they were surprisingly (and rather ingeniously) well-fed, enabling Hitler to keep his men nourished and in fighting trim until the German supply system totally collapsed during the last weeks of the war. Overall, a fascinating work - every serious student of military history should ensure that a copy of this book finds its way to his bookshelf!

Excellent book.....

Jim Pool & Tom Bock have created a masterpiece on a subject that has been long neglected. This book isn't just eye candy either although its loaded with great, detailed photo's of numerous catagories of German food and ration related items as well as rare, never before seen period photo's of the items in use. The amount of backround information presented in the text is mind blowing. While geared to the militaria collector, I have to believe that there's enough information presented to hold the interest of anyone interested in the origins of some of todays most popular food produsts. Opinions of the author's regarding the authenticity of certain items are expressed in a clear, non-confrontational manner and where recreations of rare or extinct items are used, it is so noted.
I would reccomend this book highly to anyone interested in the details of the era. There is no comparable work currently available on the subject to rival this and unless its written by these gentlemen, there probably won't be!!

Holy owned and operated!

Easily one of the finest tomes ever written on the subject! This is an exhaustive evaluation of military rations, can markings, civilian packaging, civilian packaging labeled for Wehrmacht use, there's even a whole chapter dedicated to Scho-Ka-Kola (caffeinated chocolate) which is still available today. If you are even mildly interested in German rations, the German rationing system, or the appearance of those rations for reenacting, living history, museums, or motion pictures, you owe it to yourself to have this book in your library!
