Reference Only - NOT for Learning

Background: I have a degree in Engineering and an MBA. I've worked in IT for nearly 2 decades, working with SQL-based systems: CRM, Sales Automation, Campaign Management, Data Warehousing, Data Mining, Reporting, etc....

That said, this is my first foray into the Tableau universe. This was by far the most recommended book, and having read many books under the Wiley imprint, I did not hesitate to purchase it.

The Good: It is extremely detailed, with full-color illustrations. Plenty of coverage of just about every single feature imaginable. It also has references to other publications at the end of each chapter.

The Bad: Not a single step-by-step example provided. Chapter 3: "Building Your First Visualization" is a horribly misleading title, as it does not discuss how to build a visualization from the beginning (wouldn't that be how to build "Your First Visualization"???). All of the feature explanations are made using examples of charts that have ALREADY been built. Bizarre title, for sure. The Use Cases are pathetic - more like a high-level sales brochure of how Tableau was used to address some real-world questions.

Conclusion
If you have a wealth of experience in Tableau, and need a reference to help you with the specifics of features, then I would highly recommend this.

If you are looking to learn Tableau from the ground up, this manual is absolutely the wrong choice. There are NO working examples and NO links to data that would provide a way to recreate the feature illustrations. Extremely frustrating - It should be titled, "Tableau! A Dictionary of Features! This is Not for Learning!"

Best Tableau book out there!

I was a consultant at Tableau for 30 months, and, have been an independent BI consultant for 15 years. I have every Tableau book written. This one is, absolutely, the best book, reference guide, examples, tips, tricks, etc. ever written, for Tableau.
It fully covers both Desktop and Server, theory, installation and use, Chapter 12, real customer solutions, showcases some great examples. This book will be with me in my consulting travels, and, will be recommended to all my clients!

NO step-by-step lessons, NOT for "hands on" training

If you are looking to learn HOW to actually use Tableau this is not the book for you. The book is useful for giving the reader an overview of what Tableau is capable of doing (broadly speaking). This is definitely not a hands-on how-to training guide for people who would like step-by-step examples, lessons or exercises to follow and learn from.

I'm shocked to see people professing how great this book is for begineers and experts. If you are consultant, perhaps this helps you to learn, and communicate to others, WHAT the tool can do. Unfortunately, I was hoping to learn at least the basics of how to USE Tableau (with at least some lessons that include step-by-step details).

As a debut novelist, I wanted to be different, so I wrote The Sister in what I imagined was an unconventional way, introducing characters quickly, cameo fashion with mind-blowing, diverse plot-lines laid out, criss-crossing each other.
I should clarify at this point; there are several main characters in the book who come and go throughout the story.
You never know when they'll appear next, and of course, not all of them survive...
It's an unusual novel that defies a simple synopsis, and I realized my approach to the story might not be to every reader's taste, but I also knew that those who stuck with the errant threads as they're pulled together, would be rewarded with a story quite unlike anything they've read before.
 
You can't please everyone, but reading my reviews, those I have pleased, I've pleased a lot.
 
If you like a challenging, non-linear story, maybe The Sister is for you.

A Multi-Genre Tour de Force

Sometimes I'm a terrible reader - racing through books, hunting for the meat & potatoes of it. Chasing that action! As a writer, you'd think I would do better; savor the written word and miss nothing. Not so! *slaps hand* So it was - especially as I came to realize how large this novel was - that I struggled to follow along. You see, true to his word the author didn't care to explain what was happening. It was the story, and you simply had to follow along. We see characters that seem to be major ones, only to watch them relegated to minor roles. We jump around. We follow subplots that seem major - to be the heart of the story, only to find they are not...and not always what they seem.
And then it happened. Somewhere about 52% of the novel I could no longer set it down. I had to, of course, but I found it difficult and could not wait to open it back up again. You know you've got something special when you stay up later and later before putting it away for the night. And then...gasp...I began stealing moments at work to read it. :)
This novel is a major achievement. It's the kind of book that if the author spent their entire life writing it and then wrote nothing else - it would be okay. Understandable even. How one person did something this...involved, this EPIC, is incredible to me.
In the beginning I complained to my wife that the book was long and I had no idea where it was going. In the end, I couldn't shut up about how brilliant it was. Do yourselves a favor and stay on the ride. Don't get off! There has never been another story like this one.

A Complex Tale of Paranormal Suspense

A sadistic, intelligent, evolving serial killer that makes effective use of boiler suits. A traumatized young boy who grows up to be a private investigator with a supernatural gift. A head constable who finds himself an unwilling blackmailed pawn to the killer's machinations. A reclusive psychic with a powerful black stone. A deadly secret cult seeking global power and control. With 500 pages and 156 chapters, Max China has woven an intense novel of paranormal suspense that requires a lot of patience from the reader. Swinging back and forth from detailed back stories, multiple major and minor character points-of-views and different story arcs through thirty years, this novel took a lot of note-taking and bookmarking from me to help follow the threads as they came together near the end. The author would have made the story easier to follow if he had grouped the chapters of the various story arcs into sections, giving the reader transition marks to sort out the grand story along the way.

Third time reading this intriguing tale of murder and mystery that shaped the lives of the story's versatile characters. Not because of its length, nor the number of characters whose story lines intertwine to weave a blanket of suspense that prevails throughout the book. But because each time I find myself submerged within these profound pages, I'm left with a new revelation; twists and turns, hidden meanings and correlations, fascinating 'aha!' moments I missed the first time. This novel is not for the 'spoon-fed' reader, it requires you pay attention to what you're reading, but the reward is well worth the effort! Add to my delight, an invigorating spin off book with my fave female character from the Sister plus the promise of more to come, ranking Max China's work high on my list of 'must-read'!

A JUNGIAN ANALYST SUMMARIZES JUNG'S PSYCHOLOGICAL IDEAS

At the time this book was published in 1981, Mary Ann Mattoon was a practicing Jungian analyst; she has also written Understanding Dreams, Jung and the Human Psyche: An Understandable Introduction, Jungian Psychology After Jung, etc.

She wrote in the Preface, "Jung produced a great body of writing during his lifetime. Unfortunately, much of it is difficult for many people to read... My point of view combines the Jungian clinical approach and the empirical approach of academic psychology: those of a Jungian analyst, trained at the C.G. Jung Institute of Zurich... and an academic psychologist ... the combination of these two approaches has strengthened my appreciation of the capacity of Jungian psychology to lead to a profound understanding of the human psyche." (Pg. xi-xii)

She notes, "Jung's openness to new ideas reflected the nondogmatism that is expressed in his oft-quoted statement, 'I am not a Jungian.'" (Pg. 7) Later, she states, "Despite all the problems, it seems clear that the concept of synchronicity is valuable as a daring attempt to explain certain phenomena for which no rational explanation is possible. Even persons who challenged experiences that aroused Jung's interest in and sustained his conviction about synchronicity could not entirely discount the possibility of the phenomenon." (Pg. 149)

She points out, "empirical support for Jung's theory of the collective unconscious is found in the fact that people in different parts of the world who were not in communication with each other 'invented' the same artifacts. One example is the pyramid, which was conceived of in such widely separated places as Egypt, Thailand, and Mexico." (Pg. 47)

She observes, "The concept of complexes was so central to Jung's ideas that, initially, he labeled his body of theories 'Complex Psychology.' ... 'Complex' and 'Jung' became so closely associated that even the inferiority complex, which was identified by Alfred Adler, has been thought by many people to be a discovery of Jung's. Historically, the term 'complex' originated with Theodore Ziehen, a German psychiatrist... Although Jung did not originate the concept, he refined it and devoted considerable effort to the detection and analysis of complexes. This work led to the adoption of the term in general psychology." (Pg. 115)

She points out, "Jung had little to say on the subject of homosexuality. However, he hypothesized that in a male homosexual the heterosexual libido is tied up with the mother so that sex cannot be experienced with a woman. In such men masculinity is underdeveloped, that is, only partially conscious, hence, it tends to be projected, and the object of the projection is another man... Jung had even less to say about female homosexuality, but he seemed to assume that many female homosexuals seek the mother in the partner." (Pg. 222)

This is an excellent overview of Jung's thought, that will be of considerable interest to anyone studying him.

Thorough and Clear

I bought this book because the organization I work for is committed to stair-stepping their way from a vague knowledge of MS Project to an on-site Project Server (and TFS) 2013, and from there into the Cloud with Project Online and TFS Online. The writing is clear and easy to understand, and I appreciate the fact that it covers both the functional and technical aspects of moving to MS Project Server.

If you or your organization is not familiar with MS Project, one of the most important aspects of implementing it is that you have to have it configured fairly close to perfect from the get-go. This is a technical hurdle, and it's good that Implementing and Administering Microsoft Project Server 2013 goes to the trouble of explaining some of the thought processes that you should follow as you're planning how your Project Server should be configured.

But another very important and often-overlooked aspect of technology is the dual act of getting buy-in and getting people to use the tools. Project Server in particular isn't something that can just be mandated from on-high, rolled out, and people start using it. Gary Chefetz goes to the trouble to explain how to deal with the functional hurdle of, "How do I win people over and get them to understand the value of MS Project Server?" There is an entire chapter dedicated to how to manage the people side of getting MS Project Server into your organization.

If you're considering MS Project Server, or it's a done deal and you have to figure out the best way to make it work for your organization, this is the book for you. It is somewhat technical at times (because it has to be), but well worth the effort to read.

Excellent Book by some guys who have been there done that....

If you want to cover it from nuts to bolts and get some good insight along the way, this is a great book. Don't expect to dive too deep, but deep enough to get you pointed in the right direction. These guys are not re-hashing Microsoft Help but add their practical knowledge about Project Server implementations interspersing the human and business challenges that are ususally much more challenging than the technical ones.

A must have reference book for MS Project Server 2013

The earlier versions of the Orange book have been my go to reference book for Project Server for me and my clients when implementing this product. This upgraded version, Implementating and Administrating MS Project Server 2013, continues to exhibit the reference quality that we have learned to find in the books produced by MS Project Experts.
