As Good As It Gets In Terms Of Useful Information For Artist

If you have read "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green" also by Wilcox, this is the de facto companion volume. In this he lays out systematically the various color schemes available to the artist and uses examples of great art to teach each scheme. Furthermore he analyzes each scheme in relation to the palette he teaches in "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green." If, like me, you are a convert and use this particular palette, the analyses of the color scheme choices is so helpful that it literally revolutionizes the way you will be able to simplify your color choices. The main thing is that one should first get a copy of "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green.' If you are detrermined to go straight for this book, the color swatches from "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green" are reproduced in the back of the book. If you are a working artist, make sure you have the following palette on hand: Cadmium Yellow (light or Pale), Lemon or Hansa Yellow Light, Cadmium Scarlet or Cadmium Red Light, Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Rose, French Ultramarine or UltraMarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Winsor Blue red shade or Pthalocyanine Blue (or Prussian Blue), Pthalocyanine or Winsor Green blue shade, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna (white--except if using watercolor). Good content, but very poorly edited

This book has beautiful color plates of the work of other artists. It provides useful analysis of how and why their color schemes work. Wilcox gives practical advice you can put to work immediately.

My big complaint is that the editing of the text is simply awful. As with Wilcox's other book, Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green, it appears that he is self-published and probably self-edited. This is a pity. He often splices fragments into a sentence that doesn't work. This and other grammatical errors abound: unclear pronoun references, excessive use of passive voice, etc. Often a key point Wilcox is trying to make is obscured because it is so ambiguously worded as to require re-reading several times. You may never be sure if you've correctly understood his intended meaning. His book contains many redundancies. It lurches inconsistently in tone, sometimes formal and impersonal, sometimes chatty and conversational. In addition, the flow of ideas from one topic to the next within a chapter and from chapter to chapter seems a little illogical and confusing. It's a pity Wilcox doesn't submit his work to a professional editor.

Wilcox illustrates variations on some of his suggested color harmonies by indexing a series of colored thumbnail compositions to color swatches at the back of the book. The swatches may be valuable in themselves as mixing guides. But I found Wilcox's indexing notation both cumbersome and confusing. More to the point, I would figure out the notation if the thumbnails were more appealing. They have been of little help in suggesting useful color combinations because most of them are ugly to me. Many are downright garish. This is not a complaint I would have expected for a book entitled "Perfect Color Choices for the Artist."

Even with all these faults, Wilcox makes valuable and useful points. The reproductions can be a pleasure to browse, provided you can stay out of the brambles of Wilcox's often tortured text.

I learned from this and Wilcox's other book. I would buy it again--as disappointed as I am that it falls so far short of its potential.

Repeat of Existing Knowledge

This book does not contain anything new. All content has been published in hundreds if not thousands of other publications. A quick internet search will convince you of this. Also, the book is badly edited. Hundreds of repetitions of the same argument can be found. Also, the same exposition is repeated for every color. Unless you are writing for 5th graders such duplication is just a waste of paper. The whole thing is poorly executed. It was a waste of money.

Illogical Regency

No doubt, Landon writes an enjoyable non-traditional Regency. The story is a quick read, and the characters are likable. The problem is that the author made huge psychological hurtles to overcome, and then allows the characters to solve them in a sentence.

Spoilers: The heroine must gamble to pay her blackmailer who threatened to reveal that her insane, murderous mother is alive. The real hurtle, however, is the lady fears she is 'broken' like her mother. This fear is completely solved/forgotten with one question to the hero: "Do you think I am like my mother?" "No, not at all." Wow, it is that easy?

In the pinnacle scene, the mother has just murdered two people. The last victim is a large man stabbed multiple times. The mother (who was never described as muscular) then jumps out of the shadows without injury nor fatigue to threaten the heroine/her daughter. They have this mad reasoned verbal exchange about her actions. Really, didn't even break a sweat?

If you enjoy a quick romantic read with some bodice ripping --and can close your mind to the loopholes in logic -- this is a Regency for you.

Just another average regency

Nothing particularly drew me in with this one. The plot was fairly outlandish. The story took a lot of liberties with might realistically occur in the time period. The protagonists fell abruptly and heavily in love with very little emotional development. Now, none of these is a deal breaker on its own- I've read and liked a lot of regencies with similar problems. However, it was missing that something "extra" that makes it worth putting up with the problems. No compelling characters, no witty repartee, no captivating emotional resonance. The writing itself, while solid, was not especially eloquent or striking.

That said, I felt it was an improvement on the first two in her series. It is certainly better than a large chunk of the regency dreck out there. I simply wouldn't put it in the top tier, as the high ratings (so far) seem to imply. If you want a book to passably pass the time, and regency is your thing, then give it a go. Just don't expect it to go on the keeper shelf.

Terrible

I can't express how disappointing this book was. If it were any other author, I would've given it only one star. It's the third and final instalment in this series and thank heavens for that. It follows the same characters from the first two books and therefore the same villain. This h is the daughter of the Duke in the series and the H is one of the investigators that we've come to know. There is an attraction and chemistry between these two but both don't want it going further for their own reasons. The h is hiding her murderous mother away and is being blackmailed. The H will definitely hand the mother over to the authorities and thereby ruin the h's family and her sister's chance of making a match. I really just can't bring myself to write more about this irritating and implausible book. I cannot believe that Ms Landon wrote this rubbish. The actions and behaviour of the h were so over the top that I wanted to throw my Kindle. The villain becomes so ridiculous and unbelievable. The H was halfway decent and his actions were understandable at least.

With a degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University (Boston, MA), a Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (South Hamilton, MA), and over 40 years of experience in engineering, software development, project management, and pastoral ministry, Phil brought a unique perspective to his pursuit of a Ph.D. in Archaeology and Biblical History at Trinity Southwest University (Albuquerque, NM), focusing on the Middle Bronze Age civilization-ending destruction of the Middle Ghor, the event that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities of the Jordan Valley plain north of the Dead Sea. Ever wonder just HOW God did something?

Full disclosure - Phil and I are friends and I have followed his progress on the digs over the years. This is a definitive work on the subject of Sodom and the likely cause for its destruction. Phil's approach is both biblical and scientific - something that is somehow more believable than simply scientific. I heard the story of Sodom and Gomorra in Sunday School, and I read it in the Bible. Now we see the physical evidence of Sodom and its destruction in a cataclysmic event. Dr. Silvia not only walks us through the process of how we know this is Sodom, how it was destroyed and why the region lay fallow for some 700 years after the fact. A good read for all.

Full disclosure: Phil is my brother. This well-documented book shows the benefit of taking a look at biblical phenomena through the lens of science. No that is not a contradiction: God does not have to resort to magic tricks to make things happen in our version of reality. Phil's technical skills and contacts led him to connect the archaeological dots in a way that shows clearly an entirely rational explanation of the destruction of Sodom through ordinary, though thankfully rare (within the span of a human lifetime), natural events. Religious interpretation of these events is only lightly touched upon in this book.

I've started to read this book although I've know already quite a lot about this Tall al-Hammam project. This book is the newest and best about the subject. One thing I would like to see is the dating of the glass (melt rock) itself scientifically, maybe using some paleomagnetic method.
