Dead Solid Perfect, by Dan Jenkins

The legendary golf novel, rereleased in a special edition with a new foreword by the author.

Don Imus said it best: "Dan Jenkins is a comic genius." And nowhere is that genius more evident than in Dead Solid Perfect, his uproarious 1974 novel about life on the PGA Tour. To some, Kenny Lee Puckett, the star of Jenkins's ribald saga, is a more important figure in the history of golf than Bobby Jones himself.

Review
"Dan Jenkins is a comic genius."
--Don Imus

Praise for Dead Solid Perfect:

"This is vintage Jenkins--profane, outrageous, and sharp-eyed in its parody of the overblown world of big-time golf. It is also distinguished by a climactic golf match that may be the funniest scene he's ever written."
--Newsweek

"Dan Jenkins is the nearest thing to Ring Lardner this generation has ever seen. No one has captured the essential lunacy of the twentieth-century sports (and TV) scene as accurately and hilariously as this."
--Los Angeles Times

"Jenkins is hilarious, providing more laughs per page than any other writer in the 'bidness.'"

very fast and enjoyable read.
By MichaelH
It's interesting how your likes and dislikes change with age. When I read it the first time in the 70s, I loved it. This time around it was enjoyable but not as exciting. I think being from Fort Worth and recognizing landmarks may have influenced me. However, it is a very fast and enjoyable read.....particularly if you are a golf fan.

Dead Solid Perfect
By Uf-Dah!
This book is a fast read and a completely irreverant and bawdy look at the inside world of Pro Golf. I had to set it down so many times to wipe my eyes from laughing so hard that it interrupted the thoughts...well nearly. There is a character in it who just can't play the game at the level of his Pro buddies and his string of epiphets are of legendary friends who I used to play with. Even down to my friend throwing his golf bag into a lake in Davis, Ca. "...blasted thinrodoit, rummy, farking, recalcitrant morunetated, gibble strak!!Dipple f*&^ing grunt!" among others...as his ball sliced off through the trees into the next fairway. GREAT READ. I would like to add the writer skilfully added a personal touch of troubles in his life and a great ending.

This book is first and foremost funny. Even when describing tragic events
By rob p
This book is first and foremost funny. Even when describing tragic events, the word choices are designed to make you laugh out loud.

Secondly, it is a good book about how the PGA tour was before a win made you a millionaire, and three tenths did the same. The golf story is well paced and drives the narrative forward.

Brilliant
By Nandini
To describe this book would exhaust superlatives. From familiar favourites such as "The Tell-Tale heart" (Poe) and "What Stumped the Bluejays" (Mark Twain) to stories almost unheard of - "Eve in Darkness" (Kaatje Hurlburt) and "So Much Unfairness of Things" (C. D. B. Bryan), every one of these stories is a gem, a find, a transcending experience. I had to ration myself to one story every two days, not only to make the book last longer, but so my brain could be properly marinated in the sublime perfection of each of them.

If you only ever read one set of short stories, let this be it. I cannot recommend it too strongly.

If you can only have one book on a desert island, this is it!
By Myth Margaret
When I was a student in middle school, we read stories from this collection, and I was transformed into a reader.

Now that I'm a college English teacher, I use this text every semester in my courses, and without fail, this book turns even the most reluctant reader into a literature enthusiast.

There are so many outstanding and brilliant writers, and such a terrific, wide variety of genres, that everyone can find many favorites among this collection.

Start with "War," by Luigi Pirandello, translated from Italian, about parents who are traveling to see their son off before he leaves for the front. Four pages of descriptive writing that tugs at the heart and tells of the pain of losing a loved one.

"Wine on the Desert," by Max Brand, is probably one of the greatest western stories ever written. A tale of revenge filled with irony and Brand's superb similes.

Then travel to the 1960's at a boarding school in Virginia, where PS struggles with his Latin exam and his relationship with his father in C.D.B. Bryan's "So Much Unfairness of Things."

"The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, translated from French, James Joyce's "Eveline," and Frank Stockton's "The Lady or the Tiger" are wonderful pieces for discussing gender and class and roles in society - as well as surprise endings and irony!

Of course, Edgar Allan Poe is so great, two of his stories are featured in this collection: "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Cask of Amontillado."

Ray Bradbury's science fiction short story, written in the 1050's and set 35 years into the future, "There Will Come Soft Rains," takes place after a nuclear explosion, and because there are no humans alive in the story, a house that is left standing in the rubble is personified into a character. The story features at its heart the poem by the same title by Sara Teasdale.

For humor, there's "What Stumped the Bluejays" by Mark Twain, and the classic James Thurber tale, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." Saki's story about the talking cat, "Tobermorry," is a wonderful addition.

And these are just a few of the 21 included in this text. "The Pearl" is the icing on this delicious cake. So many wonderful, classic tales that ring true today just as when they were penned. One of the best books ever.

Having had wonderful discussions with nearly 2500 students over the stories in this book, I cannot strongly recommend it enough. Every semester, I read the stories again, and still find new things to delight in.

Thank you, Lass & Tasman!

A great collection
By William S. Haydon
This book could have been called 21 Literary Masterpieces as far as I am concerned-- there is not a single misplaced story in this remarkable collection, and while many readers will no doubt recall at least some of these works from high school english class, I doubt that anyone has previously read them all....

Highly, highly recommended!

Some of the most satisfying tales are the most religious ones: Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav's ok? Bratislava in Web it's ok per book /ss "The Spider and the Fly" and Isaac Bashevis Singer's superb "Jachid and Jechidah." One of the most imitated stories of Russian literature, Gogol's "The Nose," appears, as do excerpts from Kafka's The Penal Colony , Calvino's Invisible Cities and Borges's Dreamtigers. Places have been found for Isak Dinesen's poignant "The Blue Jar" and Dostoyevski's per Web "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man." One of the best collections of parables available.
By info@storyfest.com
Not only are the stories exceptionally well-chosen. but there is a very perceptive introductory essay title "Kafka and the Modern Parables." I use his essay in a storytelling apprenticeship program, and encourage my students to orally learn some of these stories for the telling. I encourage you to do the same. The stories are powerful, the essay is insightful, and Schwartz judgment in selecting 100 parables is superb.

Brief & compelling words of wisdom
By OwlSong
Howard Schwartz introduces this anthology by saying, "The basic challenge of the parable is to write a good story in as short a space as possible." Every writer represented in these pages has more than met that challenge. This is an extraordinary collection of literary parables written with subtle power, vivid imagery, and remarkable brevity -- some are no longer than a single paragraph, while the longest is just a few pages at most. Yet you won't find them lacking in substance.

There are some familiar names here, of course -- Kafka, Singer, Borges, Bob Dylan -- but their stories are no less effective for their familiarity. But the majority of these pieces were previously unknown to me, and have me eager to read more by their authors. It's a perfect volume for dipping into at random, as each story will leave you with food for thought. And it may even inspire you to try your hand at the form yourself! Most highly recommended for the curious & questing mind.

Entertaining!
By kingfisher1031
This generously varied and very fun anthology of short parables by legendary authors of the past two centuries (from Edgar Allan Poe to Bob Dylan) is verily poetic. Philosophical stories loaded with magical realism and surrealism, and splendiferous humor and irony. The power of noun and verb is in full demonstration here. Interesting that these shorter pieces share characteristics of the writers’ longer works; in other words, their style and imprint are blessedly recognizable. It’s almost poetry, but unmistakably prose. A great bathroom reader.

Global Warming and Other Eco Myths: How the Environmental Movement Uses False Science to Scare Us to DeathFrom Prima Lifestyles

Includes essays by Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug and other noted scientists and scholars
The modern environmental movement began with the publication of three seminal works, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Paul Ehrlich's The Population Bomb, and the Club of Rome's The Limits to Growth. These books' dismal visions of a poisoned, over-populated, resource-depleted world spiraling down toward environmental collapse are today's conventional wisdom. And every year we hear about new "conclusive" reports from special interest groups claiming that our atmosphere's temperatures are soaring, our air and water are more polluted, our cities are more crowded, and our global food supply is more precarious than ever before. However, according to a number of leading scientists from around the world, members of the environmental movement are guilty of twisting—sometimes manufacturing—the facts in an effort to frighten people into joining their cause.
In this eye-opening book, some of the most respected researchers in the country explode the myths behind much of the doom and gloom of today's environmental movement. You will discover how the hysteria about global warming, overpopulation, mass extinctions, imminent famines, biotechnology, energy shortages, and more are grounded not in reason but in false science and a fear of progress. When placed beside the overwhelming facts, some of the most pervasive eco-myths crumble, including:
Myth:
Antarctica is melting due to global warming—threatening to raise ocean levels
Fact:
Antarctica has been cooling—and its glaciers thickening—for the past 30 years
Myth:
The global population is growing faster than our ability to produce food
Fact:
Global fertility rates are falling dramatically, and with advanced technology, farmers are producing more food using fewer resources than ever before
Myth:
Solar- and wind-powered generators are a renewable, efficient, and less intrusive alternative to gas-, oil-, and coal-burning generators
Fact:
Global fossil fuel supplies are in no near-term danger of being depleted, and a single 555-megawatt natural gas power plant produces more electricity than 13,000 windmills
Myth:
Modern pesticides and fertilizers are increasing the rates of cancer in humans
Fact:
No study has ever shown that anyone has developed cancer from the legal application of pesticides, and environmental pollution accounts for at most 2 percent of all cancer cases versus 30 percent caused by tobacco use
And many more
Ultimately, this book shows that uniting much of the environmental movement is an agenda that is not so much anti-pollution as it is anti-human. Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths lays out the true state of the planet, which, as you'll discover, is more healthy, vibrant, and clean than ideologically motivated environmentalists want you to believe.

Review
Praise for Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths
"Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths challenges the tired orthodoxies of ideological environmentalism. It's refreshing to read that there is no environmental 'cancer epidemic,' that climatologist John Christy says there is no imminent global warming catastrophe, and that Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug predicts that we will be able to feed 10 billion people using less land. If market forces are unleashed, even drinking water can last forever. I just wish the environmentalists would read Bailey's book." — John Stossel, ABC News 20/20
"Facts are stubborn things, and Ronald Bailey has once again assembled the best environmental fact-checkers in the business to explode the common misconceptions and distortions about the real state of our planet." — Steven Hayward, resident scholar, American Enterprise Institute, and author of the Index of Leading Environmental Indicators
"A stunning riposte to the eco-alarmists. Beyond debunking environmentalist scare mongering, Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths is the clearest explanation in print of the promise that eco-friendly technology offers to the human race. A must read for anyone who wants to know how we can build a healthy world environment for our children and grandchildren." — Denis Dutton, editor of Arts & Letters Daily on the Web and professor, University of Canterbury, New Zealand

From the Inside Flap

This book turned me around completely on Global Warming
By Barak Lurie
I believed whole-heartedly in global warming before I read this book. I was a big believer. This book completely turned me around and helped me see how shallow my thinking was. I recommend it to anyone. It's also great about the other myths out there. Such a great analysis.

Thank you for opening my eyes.

An anthology worth picking up
By G. Stelzenmuller
The good part about anthologies is that they tend to cover more ground than an author normally would on his/her own. Such serves the reader well. "Global Warming and Other Eco-myths" does cover much ground in the realm of "fierce ecological advocacy," handling topics on population, natural resources, water, industrial products, and of course, global warming. There are three chapters on general policy-philosophy which go along with topic-specific chapters.

The themes which run through all parts of the book may roughly be summarized as: 1. Strident environmentalism needs to be braked with logical thinking and a truthful look at actual data; 2. Too many "hot" environmental topics of the past have been misunderstood at best, intentionally misleading at worst; 3. Human beings are not Earth's pests; and 4. Human brains are the most powerful force for solving these largely technological problems discussed in the book. No reader will agree with everything in this work. In fact Ron Bailey, the editor, has since this book's publication changed much of his mind on the global warming part! [[...]

For sure it is worth your picking up this book. This reviewer purchased a copy for reference. Who know? In a decade and one-half, let's see how much of this pans out -- results are always the best judge!

much cheaper than my bookstore!
By Lily Jones
For whatever reason, my campus bookstore does not sell the paperback version of this book. Even renting it from my bookstore was more expensive than just buying this book from this seller. I had another student ask where I got it. There is NOTHING different between this book and the hardback version the other students have in my class. Page numbers are the same, word-for-word everything is the same. The seller even rushed the shipping at no additional cost to me when I wrote to them that I needed it for a class. All in all, a happy purchase.

Rent. Don't buy.
By Elizabeth
I don't often write reviews on textbooks but for this one, I'm making the exception.
I really hate this book. Not only is it drawn out and pretty jumbled up, making the chapters 60 pages long on average, it's also incredibly difficult to find ANYTHING in this book. This is my primary problem. In my Developmental Psychology class, a lot of our quizzes and tests are open-book BECAUSE the chapters are so long. But they are also timed; you get roughly 1 minute and 30 seconds per question to answer. Using the book often ends up being more of a hindrance than a help because the index in this book is complete and utter crap. Like I have never seen a more worse index in any other textbook in my life. There are vague things in the index that never should've been there and there are specific things that SHOULD be there but aren't so before you know it, you've wasted 3 minutes searching for an answer and you start a race to play catch-up.

If you have to get this book for a class, take my advice and just rent it so you don't waste too much of your money on this dumb product.

By Diego E Urena
The book is excellent, the only problem I am facing is that my psychology teacher uses definitions for some of the key terms from another psychology book as a source when she is giving us the exams. My self and some other students are thinking to talk to the teacher about the issue, since the teacher said at the beginning of the class to look for the definitions of these key terms on the back of this book I rented from you guys.

So going back to the book, I like it and it is very informative. I also found some of the notes and highlighted topics probably from one of the students who rented it before me.
Thanks
Diego Urena

    Excellent reference
    By A Customer
I did not have this book as a graduate class text, but I used it extensively while studying for my candidacy exam. This book was invaluable for that purpose. It contains great insight and intuition for many of the physical phenomena described. Its theoretical description of neutron stars was better than any other I had seen. I highly recommend this book.

About this edition --- Poorly made.
    By Alfredo
I am not going to talk about the subject of the book. If it has been around for those many years (in spite of the so many observational advances in the subject) is because the quality. I just want to say that this edition is poorly built physically. The words are printed with an inject-type-low-quality machine, so if you have a good eye you can see that the letters have irregular borders. You don't see that in old editions. After one month the pages are starting to falling apart. The chapter 2, which is about the equation of state in a degenerate gas and to which you have to come back to it often, have the extremes of the pages off so now I have to be very careful with the book if I don't wanna lose the pages. This is very annoying, specially if you remember that you paid about a $100 for this poorly built edition. It is a disappointment too, the book is very good, but is not made to last.

    Last things...
    By FrKurt Messick
There are few things in the universe as apocalyptic in scope as the death of a star -- generally speaking, the remnant of a star at the end of its lifespan will turn into one of three objects: a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole (there are a few other variations or extensions, but this is the primary end).
This particular book is designed for the advanced undergraduate in physical sciences, or the beginning graduate student. It presumes no specific astrophysical education, although few without an interest in astrophysics will seek out this text, and thus readers will probably know a thing or two. It does assume a good degree of knowledge of physics, including electromagnetism, mechanics (both classical/Newtonian and quantum), special relativity, and thermodynamics. It also assumes a good proficiency with integral and differential calculus; the higher the mathematical training the better for understanding this text.
Compact objects are the core fragments or remnants of stars -- as such, they differ from stars in significant ways. They are no longer burning fuel in fusion reactions, which is what supports much of the mass of regular stars against gravitational collapse. The three objects of the title are different degrees of the same type of object, and what a collapsing star becomes depends upon how much mass still remains at the exhaustion of nuclear energy processes. The collapse of such large objects impacts matter at the very smallest levels -- hence, the study here is not simply one of gravitational pull versus surface area and small size relative to stars, but also of the distortions that occur at the smallest of levels due to the tremendous warping.
The book begins with a broad overview of what is known and not known, and what will be studied. For instance, the dividing lines between objects is blurry, particularly when it comes to determining the line between neutron star and black hole formation. Similarly, there are other methods of forming black holes (accretion of materials onto neutron stars, supermassive star collapse, or primordial black holes) that are theoretically possible but still (as of the publication of this text) still very speculative.
Compact objects are important in the universe for many reasons. Many galaxies seem to have such compact objects both at their centre and scattered through the stellar populations. They produce various x-ray sources (pulsars) as well as other interesting objects in the sky.
This is not a book for the casual, back-yard astronomer. It can be used by the advanced amateur, however, who has sufficient mathematics and physics background. There are problems to be worked (this is a text book, after all) -- many of these are fairly elementary with computer programming now; at the time of publication, the regular use of computers was only beginning to become commonplace. One hopes that the text will be updated someday, particularly as some aspects of the field change sufficiently that various emphases have changed -- in thinking about popular astrophysics (if such is not an oxymoron), black holes tend to be attractive (if you'll forgive the pun!), and thus the literature is frequently updated.
The authors, both professors at Cornell, have interest in astrophysics, cosmology, stellar dynamics, and relativity. The text is solid and interesting, worthwhile even twenty years after original publication.

The Scalpel and the Silver Bear: The First Navajo Woman Surgeon Combines Western Medicine and Traditional Healing, by Lori Alvord, Elizabe

The first Navajo woman surgeon combines western medicine and traditional healing.

A spellbinding journey between two worlds, this remarkable book describes surgeon Lori Arviso Alvord's struggles to bring modern medicine to the Navajo reservation in Gallup, New Mexico—and to bring the values of her people to a medical care system in danger of losing its heart.

Dr. Alvord left a dusty reservation in New Mexico for Stanford University Medical School, becoming the first Navajo woman surgeon. Rising above the odds presented by her own culture and the male-dominated world of surgeons, she returned to the reservation to find a new challenge. In dramatic encounters, Dr. Alvord witnessed the power of belief to influence health, for good or for ill. She came to merge the latest breakthroughs of medical science with the ancient tribal paths to recovery and wellness, following the Navajo philosophy of a balanced and harmonious life, called Walking in Beauty. And now, in bringing these principles to the world of medicine, The Scalpel and the Silver Bear joins those few rare works, such as Healing and the Mind, whose ideas have changed medical practices-and our understanding of the world.

    Solid credentials but too abstract
    By Brad4d
--Dr Alvord writes about her journeys as a Native American student and physician. The book seems clearly designed for non-technical readers rather than the professional medical community, and there's little medical jargon. She uses her own difficult pregnancy and the death of a beloved grandmother as case studies in integrating Western medicine and Navajo ideas.
--On the one hand, it's worth reading this book just to hear such an inspirational story from such a decent role model. Dr Alvord tells her story with dignity and courage and has many good ideas about listening to patients while integrating Balance and Harmony in our profession (although these ideas don't seem as radical or as rare within the medical community as she seems to imply, and I don't think she does anyone a great service by implying they are).
--On the other hand, the book seems disappointingly abstract, even given the limitations of confidentiality and space. The stories of Navajo healing barely scratched the surface and the book was pretty scanty with practical advice that would help non-Native healers understand Native American patients. I'd love to have heard her perspectives on the magnitude of Native American health problems, how she handled the constant pressures of time and funding, how she motivated patients, or how she successfully used traditional Native American methods to help manage serious medical-social problems (i.e. alcohol use, diabetogenic diets, family pressures, basic compliance and responsibility issues, etc). In short, I'd like to have heard more about her successes.
--The book adds perspective to all those who criticize Western medicine as too impersonal/sterile/uncaring/whatever, but seems to fail in demonstrating how to predictably improve things and still efficiently deliver technically competent health care to people with different levels of motivation and understanding. Western medicine works beautifully in its own niche, but it can be made to work less efficiently if we mess around with the wrong things.
--Perhaps medicine will improve if we balance the responsibilities of patients to live a healthy lifestyle with the responsibilities of healers to carefully listen to patients and then help them heal. This book did not practically help me to do this, so I cannot give it five stars despite my respect for her credentials. I do look forward to a sequel.
--Other books which may be of interest include Blessings (by Dr. A. Organick), The Dancing Healers, and Primary Care of Native American Patients.
