This is how a tech book should be written.
By critical_g
As background, before reading this book I had many years of web development experience, including a few years of Struts and ASP.NET development.

This book is not simply a reference, as it starts off as a programmers' guide. The book begins with a "hello, world" type of application. Where it shines is in giving very specific instructions for getting that simple application up and running - such as what jar files to download and where to put them. From there, trying out the examples on your own is very simple.

The book is very well organized, and thorough. After covering the basics of JSF, it gets into the gory details of writing your own JSF components. It then provides a reference of the standard JSF components and the MyFaces components.

One minor complaint is that some of the text covering the basics is verbose and somewhat redundant. But, if you are new to web development and the Model-View-Controller pattern, the wordiness might be helpful.

Very well done.

Excellent Book (from review on TheServerSide.com)
By Joseph Ottinger
JavaServer Faces: The Complete Reference, by Chris Schalk and Ed Burns, is a once-and-for-all reference to JSF 1.1 and 1.2, covering almost anything and everything JSF-related.

Differences between JSF 1.1 and 1.2 are noted whenever they might occur. The book also has some very helpful and interesting design notes from the specification group to enlighten readers of why some choices were made or not made, so that the reasoning behind decisions is exposed.

The book has five sections: an introduction to the framework, extending JavaServer Faces, applying JSF (which addresses security, i18n, and testing/debugging), JSF tools and libraries (with coverage of the standard component library, the MyFaces JSF implementation, and configuration files), and a set of appendices covering the Faces Console (a third-party tool to help configure JSF), Shale, migration from Struts, and a set of third-party component libraries.

The first section starts off with a history of JSF, and quickly launches into an application - a simple registration application, complete with error checking, data validation, navigation, and a working UI. Along the way, the authors explain the concepts used so that readers don't get confused. The details are explained in enough depth that readers can see why something is being done without drowning them in excess detail about what's actually happening.

Each chapter builds on the previous one, and in this reviewer's opinion, most readers would be able to actually start applying JSF almost from the very beginning. An idea is hardly ever presented without a clear explanation of why readers would want to understand it, although the request lifecycle is explained in the third chapter. That said, the request lifecycle is very clearly explained and justified, so while it's not clear why it's presented so early at first glance, a quick scan reveals how important it is to JSF, and why understanding it is a core concept JSF developers should be aware of.

The section on extending JSF covers custom UI components, custom components without a user interface, AJAX components, and the use of alternative display technologies like Facelets. Having this information clearly expressed in print is very useful, and it's also fairly complete, with hardly any core functionality left unexplained or without examples.

The section on security is also useful, especially since it does a good job of explaining the servlet security model by design and then cleanly integrates it with JSF, through both container-managed security and application-managed security.

The only complaint I had about the book was that it was too short: the examples of the components in the various reference sections were not complete enough. In particular, the Tomahawk references (the MyFaces AJAX extensions) were slightly out of date (hardly the fault of the book authors) but also incomplete, which made using some of the Tomahawk extensions less pleasant. It doesn't help that the MyFaces documentation itself is not as complete as one would like.

It's a credit to the authors that, at the book's weakest, it's as useful as the official documentation, and at its strongest, is easily becoming the first reference reached for.

The most comprehensive JSF coverage so far!
By Kyrill Alyoshin
I really enjoyed reading this book. I have several JSF books, and I feel that most of them were rushed to the market. This one is an exception. The coverage is very comprehensive (the book is written by the spec lead), JSF 1.2 is extensively discussed. The book covers multiple open-source "sub-frameworks" for JSF such as Shale and Facelets as well as various component libraries.

JSF is a relatively complex framework, and one does need a good reference to be able to master it. I think this book is it.

An Answer to A hungry Heart
By Carol Pauwels
Years of a thristy heart and no one to define this yearning, I was filled with wonder and unspeakable joy when I read this book and found the answers to my many questions. When there were years of a deep calling in the heart and a unexplainable love for God and no one to define this aching,it was like sighing in relief as I read the very things that God had been doing in and through me was not my imagination but and an actual experience with the Holy One.
There are many men and women who have had as deep and abiding relationship with the Sovereign Lord, Jesus Christ. To actually put down on paper this life experience of relating to God on a personal bases would refresh the mind and bring delight to the heart. Like one receiving a cool drink of water, this book settled any question of scriptural correctness in relating to God, the Father.
It is unfortunate that there has not been sufficient scriptural teaching on prayer but this book opens the door to freeing the heart and the longing to please God. Also it releases the reader to find their God given expression and then to enjoy and release others to their God given expression.
I am sorry that some readers may take an offence to this book and the information inside. But let us be responsible readers and look up the scriptures for ourselves and see that God has laid out a pattern for relating to Him and He will never leave us without an answer. In the search for truth, God will not disappoint but meet us on that road to understanding. Thus He gives people who have walked before us and can point the way. We grant teachers the permission to mold our minds and provoke us to learn, should we not see these gifted men and women (like Alice Smith)as providers of instruction and education?
Thank you Alice Smith for being vulnerable and risking exposure of a deep and personal relatonship that many of us long for and have not yet known. This book will open the door to a journey filled with surpises and wonder, plus a depth of relating to God long awaited for.

Experiencing the Joy of Partnering in Prayer
By A Customer
I don't know what book the previous reviewer read, but the Beyond the Veil, by Alice Smith that I read was deeply bathed with scriptural references. It not only was based in a biblical foundation, it literally draws you beyond the typical teaching on prayer and encourages you towards a greater understanding of God's desire for every Christian in prayer. I found that through the teaching is this book, my relationship with God was intensified and I began to see how God could use me to effectually partner with Him in prayer to see changes on our physical world and in the lives of the people around me. If you are desiring a deeper level of relationship with God, I urge you to get this book and begin to understand how to partner with God in intercession. If you put into practice what you learn from this book, you will experience the joy of seeing God working in the lives of those you interceed for and you will know by witnessing for yourself how God changes things when we partner with Him in prayer.

Wonderful truth
By Melvyn Lee
All I can say is that this book is a timely birth. As creatures prone to mistakes, we can deliberately concoct a lot of undeserving scenes and excuses as to why God delays answers. However Alice does a simple and wonderful work by uprooting those types of false perceptions and ideologies and planting in us powerful truth.
This book is written because perhaps many of us are still lingering in the outer court. God Himself desires we come boldly before Him. The path towards His secret chamber requires only a step of simplicity and faith-filled attitude. Alice Smith is a saving rope from God to answer that cry of our heart in understanding the way to reach Him.
With joy elating testimonies, Alice has proven to us that the sincere cry of our heart can arrest the attention of God to change the prosaic condition of life. Even when we are inert because of pressure in life, rest assured God can also raise His own to pray on our behalf. This special group of people is called intercessors. By analogy, intercessors are liken the conscious and expressive voice of individuals, groups, races and nations who are lost in words, expression, identification or standing before God. Naturally this book is written from the window of an intercessor's view.
In the area of personal prayer, the practicality and step-by-step instructions is easily tantamount to a manual. I felt that Alice needs to tackle the subject of personal prayer because she knows very well that our prayer life can be infiltrated by the minute and trivial irritations that surrounds us. In personal prayer, we need to collapse our commitment into an intimate level with our Maker. Intimacy requires us to unwind in a place of quietness. i appreciate Alice's down to earth approach in giving good tips to keep ourselves free from the "noise" level that can easily distract our prayer life.
If you understand the intention of "Beyond the Veil", you'll soon realize that Alice is one of those rare ones who has learnt to read the heart of God accurately. As she understands the language of prayer, this book can teach you to be closer to God without shame or guilt.

Making Modern Science: A Historical Survey, by Peter J. Bowler, Iwan Rhys Morus

The development of science, according to respected scholars Peter J. Bowler and Iwan Rhys Morus, expands our knowledge and control of the world in ways that affect-but are also affected by-society and culture. In Making Modern Science, a text designed for introductory college courses in the history of science and as a single-volume introduction for the general reader, Bowler and Morus explore both the history of science itself and its influence on modern thought.

Opening with an introduction that explains developments in the history of science over the last three decades and the controversies these initiatives have engendered, the book then proceeds in two parts. The first section considers key episodes in the development of modern science, including the Scientific Revolution and individual accomplishments in geology, physics, and biology. The second section is an analysis of the most important themes stemming from the social relations of science-the discoveries that force society to rethink its religious, moral, or philosophical values. Making Modern Science thus chronicles all major developments in scientific thinking, from the revolutionary ideas of the seventeenth century to the contemporary issues of evolutionism, genetics, nuclear physics, and modern cosmology.

Written by seasoned historians, this book will encourage students to see the history of science not as a series of names and dates but as an interconnected and complex web of relationships between science and modern society. The first survey of its kind, Making Modern Science is a much-needed and accessible introduction to the history of science, engagingly written for undergraduates and curious readers alike.

Review
"This book strikes a wonderful balance between basic exposition and constructive, critical literature review. The selection of topics - 'modern science' from the seventeenth century through the twentieth, along with analysis of the themes that have animated historians' study of these many endeavors - forms a coherent and readable whole. It should fit curricular needs very well." - David Kaiser, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; "The breadth of knowledge represented here is remarkable. There is nothing on (or off) the market that equals what Bowler and Morus have accomplished." - Richard Burkhardt, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign"

By Amy E. Harth
These authors have attempted to fill the void in the history of science field by creating not exactly a textbook, but not simply a survey of scientific events. This combines both the survey and methodology by offering two sections: one which includes self-contained units on major events or periods in the history of science, and another which includes the methodological themes in the field.

The introduction is of great help since it offers a very short (13 pages), but thorough history of the history of science including the major works which are considered classics and addressing many of the historical issues as well as scientific issues which are considered when studying this field. The history of science as a discipline is clearly not limited to recording a list of discoveries, inventions or scientific events, but has much greater depth as this work makes clear. Furthermore, the authors do an excellent job of making it readable and especially thought provoking and expect the reader not only to question other science, history and history of science books, but also their own ideas and conclusions. How refreshing!

Additionally, each chapter ends with a list of references for further reading, rather than a long disorganized bibliography at the end. Furthermore, there are several illustrations, but the authors have not succumbed to riddling the text with graphics or breaking it into so many sections and sidebars that it is cluttered and unreadable, as unfortunately is the case with many test books.

I highly recommend this to the student (or professor) of the history of science and the dedicated general reader.

A Subject-Balanced Survey of the History of Science
By David Milliern
Bowler and Morus put together a fantastic survey of the history of science. I think it is adequately philosophical, and it does a great job of gauging the periods in history with a lens that is representative of the era. The problem I see with many works on history is that they approach the content of times past by applying a modern lens. While sometimes useful, I don't think this is a fair way to proceed. At any rate, this is not an issue in Morus and Bowler's work.

What's great about this book is that it does not focus on the history of physics, as so many books of this sort do. Coming from physics, the last thing I wanted was a book about the history of science that was 99% history of physics. The authors were able to get a nice blend of subjects, and they even hit topics like popular science in the 18th and 19th century.

All in all, this book is well written, very, very easy to read, and it has about as much useful information as can be put in so many pages. Above all, it is friendly to a readership not coming from the sciences. Though I come from the sciences, the other students in my class, all of whom were history graduate students with little or no training in the sciences, pointed that not much knowledge of science was necessary to clarify points made by the authors. For anyone that needs convincing on this issue, a quick look at the chapter on 20th century physics will convince you of the readability; no concept is introduced in such a way that it feel completely alien. They do a nice job of wording things.

I do have one negative criticism, though. The book is intended to talk about the making of modern science, but the problem is that much of the Baconian, as well as other philosophical inputs, were, largely, left out. In my view, this is a detriment, in any attempt to understanding the rise of modern science. My feeling was that one more chapter on the development of methods, even if a romp through history, would make for a good additional chapter.

This book is enjoyable, and I recommend it to the scientist, beginning historian of science, beginning philosopher of science, historian, and layman. For the layman, there may be no real need to read anything more, if one's desire is to simply grasp the big picture and gain some competency of the history of science.

Dense but thorough and well laid out
By D. Wick
Bowler and Morus (B&M henceforth) set themselves two projects in this book. First, to create a general introductory overview of the history of science. Second, to introduce their reader (presumably an undergraduate history major) to arguments currently playing out amongst academics who study the history of science.

They are pretty successful at both, although a reader who buys this book without already being aware of the academic controversies may occasionally be puzzled by some of the positions that B&M take.

The tone is a bit dry and the number of facts per page can be overwhelming to someone who is learning this material for the first time. It's more of a textbook than a pleasure read. However, to my knowledge they have done an excellent job of covering relevant and significant people, events, connections to past knowledge, and social influences.

On several occasions, their "conclusions" at the end of each chapter are unsupported (at least in this book) assertions rather than actual consequences of the evidence and arguments they cover. No doubt this is largely due to the difficulty of compressing 550 years of scientific discovery into a single volume. I consider this the chief weakness of the book. Otherwise, it accomplishes its intended purpose well.

A professional historian will not need this book. A scientist or well educated layperson interested in history might find it overwhelming or simply too dense. But if you are looking for a middle ground between a completely academic volume and a pleasure read, or if you need a great bibliography or condensed summary volume, this is almost your only choice. Lucky for you it's well done.

A megadose of profound psychology
By Ross James Browne
_The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche_ is one of the better volumes out of the Princeton/Bollingen series of Jung's collected works, and is absolutely essential for any serious Jungian. I will go over the essays in sequence:
First comes an essay entitled "On Psychic Energy". This is the most difficult essay in this volume. Generally, Jung discusses his concept of the "canalization of libildo". This is interesting in that Jung tries to redefine "libido" by moving away from its traditional, purely sexual connotation. For Jung, libido is simply a generic form of psychic energy which can be redirected or "canalized" into both sexual AND non-sexual activities, such as religious rituals, dances, chants, and incantations. It is only when our intrinsic need for ritual is supressed that we find our libido forced to direct its energies into sexual perversion. Although the concept is interesting, the writing style of this essay is rather vague and opaque, and if you find yourself bogged down, I strongly suggest you skip this first essay. Don't worry - it's all downhill after this essay. The rest of the book is much more lucid and readable.
Next comes an essay called "The Transcendent Function", which basically deals with the healing breakthrough which is the goal of the patient in psychotherapy. Next is an essay dealing with the "Complex Theory". This essay deals with word-association tests in which the experimenter observes the subjects reations and hesitations when given a word that evokes embarrassing or painful memories. Both of these essays are very useful and informative.
Next we have about three more short but very profound and informative essays. Then comes the centerpiece of the book, a potent and spectaculuar classic of 20th century psychology entitled "On the Nature of the Psyche". This, along with "Answer to Job" is one of Jung's very best essays. It deals with an astounding range of topics, including the limitations and paradoxes associated with epistemology, and the dualistic and paradoxical interrelationship between subjective, inner psyche and the objective/outer world. This essay has much to say about the limitations of our subjectivity, and the degree to which we depend on other people and the outside world to attain consciousness. Jung does an excellent job in demarcating the thin line which divides the outer world and the sum of our subjective perceptions. Overall, this essay is a mind warping trip into a sea of paradoxical mysteries of the psyche.
After a short essay dealing with spirits, we come to a series of three great essays: "Spirit and Life", "Basic Postulates of Analytical Psychology", and "Analytical Psychology and Weltanschauung". These fantastic essays deal expertly with the delicate issue of fate and determinism vs. freewill, and the idea of achieving an objective attitude or "Weltanscauung". Jung warns against attempting to unite everyone under one objetive attitude or "ism". This can only lead to repression, nationalistic, racist, and PATRIOTIC BIAS, and ultimately, war. According to Jung, when one nation unites under an "ism" or Weltanschauung which is erronously believed to be objective and appropriate for everyone, we will end up with a repression of indivdual, diverse opinions at best, and at worst, will have a worldwide tragedy resulting from our quest to force this attitude on other people. (and yes, according to Jung's book, DEMOCRACY also counts as one of those "ism's" that we should not try to force on to other people). Of course this tragedy will be carried out under the banner of patriotism.
Next we have three more short essays which are very good, especially "The Soul and Death". After that, we have the famous essay, "Syncronicity", which is available by itself in paperback if you only want that. This is a fascinating essay dealing with paranormal psychic phenomena such as psychokinesis, ESP, and telepathy. If you want to see more details on this essay, see my corresponding review for the stand-alone paperback version.
Overall, _The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche_ is a monumental, epic work. A true magnum opus of psychology, I recommend this volume to anyone who is willing to take on a challenge for the pursuit of self-knowledge.

Jung defines his model of the psyche and how it works
By Neal J. Pollock
With the possible exception of "The Symbolic Life," this is my favorite of the books in "The Collected Works" of C. G. Jung. Maybe it's synchronistic that one is CW18 and the other is CW8? In any case, this volume includes Jung's thoughts on many of his breakthrough ideas and concepts and describes his model of the psyche. His model adds a 3rd dimension (the collective unconscious) to Freud's (conscious and subconscious). Though, of course, Jung calls the subconscious the personal unconscious. This 3 dimensional view translates the subconscious into the home of the psychological complexes. Jung applied the mathematical concept of complexes (a complex number has a real or rational part plus an irrational [I'd call it non-rational] part which is a multiple of "i" = the square root of minus one). Jung didn't like what he called neologisms = newly created words; especially when an analogous word was already available. He also considered himself an empirical scientist and did not believe his theories were the last word in psychology.

p. 297 The purpose of research is not to imagine that one possesses the theory which alone is right, but doubting all theories, to approach gradually nearer to the truth.

In this volume, Jung explores the relationships among these three layers of the psyche as related to the real world and our knowledge of it.

p. 171 All knowledge is the result of imposing some kind of order upon the reactions of the psychic system as they flow into our consciousness-an order that reflects the behavior of a metapsychic reality or that which is in itself real.

People project their inner psyche upon the external world-very similar to the Tibetan Buddhist Dzogchen and Mahamudra philosophies in which the real world is empty of an inherent nature (it arises only dependent upon causes) and the reality we perceive is an integrated projection of sentient beings, itself being dependently arising. Of course, Jung did study Eastern philosophies and religions.

p. 207 A poorly developed consciousness, for instance which because of massed projections is inordinately impressed by concrete or apparently concrete things and states, will naturally see in the instinctual drives the source of all reality. It remains blissfully unaware of the spirituality of such a philosophical surmise.

Also, his theory of synchronicity (meaningful coincidences) supports this view of the relationship of psyche to matter. This is a bit reminiscent of the Einstein's view (now part of modern physics) that matter and energy are of the same nature.

p. 215 it is not only possible but fairly probable, even, that psyche and matter are two different aspects of one and the same thing. The synchronicity phenomena point, it seems to me, in this direction, for they show that the nonpsychic can behave like the psychic, and vice versa, without there being any causal connection between them.

However, the danger of identifying, incorrectly, to the world of matter on one hand is matched by the danger of identifying with the collective unconscious' Archetypes on the other.

p. 221 Subjective consciousness must, in order to escape this doom, avoid identification with collective consciousness by recognizing its shadow as well as the existence and the importance of the archetypes. These later are an effective defense against the brute force of collective consciousness and the mass psyche that goes with it.

Rather balance is to be sought in the Individuation process.

p. 223 Psychology actualizes the unconscious urge to consciousness. It is, in fact, the coming to consciousness of the psychic process. And--

p. 225 Conscious wholeness consists in a successful union of ego and self, so that both preserve their intrinsic qualities. If, instead of this union, the ego is overpowered by the self, then the self too does not attain the form it ought to have, but remains fixed on a primitive level and can express itself only through archaic symbols...If the ego is dissolved in identification with the self, it gives rise to a sort of nebulous superman with a puffed-up ego and a deflated self.

p. 226 Individuation does not shut one out from the world, but gathers the world to oneself.

This implies that we withdraw our projections from the world and make the unconscious conscious.

p. 342 Like primitives, we are at first wholly unconscious of our actions, and only discover long afterwards why it was that we acted in a certain way. In the meantime we content ourselves with all sorts of rationalizations of our behavior, all of them equally inadequate.

The Go-Giver Leader: A Little Story About What Matters Most in Business, by Bob Burg, John David Mann

“I met last week with your leaders,” Ben began. “I heard what they had to say. And you know, they make a good point.” He paused. Take charge, Ben, he told himself. Take control. He looked around the conference room. Take, take, take. Was that really what he was here to do?

With their acclaimed bestseller The Go-Giver, Bob Burg and John David Mann proved that a heartfelt parable could also express a powerful idea. In The Go-Giver Leader (originally published as It’s Not About You), they offer an equally compelling tale about a struggling small business and the ambitious young executive trying to lead them to a crucial decision.

Allen & Augustine has manufactured high-quality chairs for decades. Its people take pride in their work and feel loyal to their owners and management team. But this revered company is now at a crossroads, hurt by a tough economy, foreign competition, and a cash crunch. The air is filled with the scent of uncertainty, anxiety, perhaps even panic.

Into this setting enters Ben, who’s been assigned by a larger firm to promote a merger that will rescue Allen & Augustine. Ben’s facts are undeniable: the chair maker can either merge and modernize or go bankrupt and vanish. So why can’t he persuade anyone to buy in, from the CEO on down?
Will Ben find a way to sway the employee shareholders before the climactic vote? And can Allen & Augustine survive without losing its soul? The answers may surprise you as you follow Ben on his journey to understanding that the path to genuine influence lies less in taking leadership than in giving it.

By James Butzen
Ever since reading the Go-Giver, I've been hooked

Bob & David both write and craft incredible stories into all of their work. If you're thinking of purchasing this book, I highly recommend that you do! As a matter of fact, if you haven't read the others, my suggestion is that you start with "The Go-Giver" yourself first, you'll be happy you did

Great wisdom - great read!
By Pam Blackman
I really did like this book. Being the highly kinesthetic person I am it was so nice to have solid leadership principles put into an easy to read, engaging, and heart warming story. For me it was so much easier to grasp some good applicable knowledge & wisdom than reading a "practice based" only book. Great job!...Mr. Burg!

The Wonder, by Emma Donoghue

*The latest masterpiece by Emma Donoghue, bestselling author of Room*

ACCLAIM FOR THE WONDER: "Deliciously gothic.... Dark and vivid, with complicated characters, this is a novel that lodges itself deep" (USA Today, 3/4 stars); "Heartbreaking and transcendent" (New York Times); "A fable as lean and discomfiting as Anna's dwindling body.... Donoghue keeps us riveted" (Chicago Tribune); "Donoghue poses powerful questions about faith and belief" (Newsday)

In the latest masterpiece by Emma Donoghue, bestselling author of Room, an English nurse brought to a small Irish village to observe what appears to be a miracle-a girl said to have survived without food for months-soon finds herself fighting to save the child's life.

Tourists flock to the cabin of eleven-year-old Anna O'Donnell, who believes herself to be living off manna from heaven, and a journalist is sent to cover the sensation. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale's Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl.

Written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, THE WONDER works beautifully on many levels--a tale of two strangers who transform each other's lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.

Review
"[Donoghue's] contemporary thriller Room made [her] an international bestseller, but this gripping tale offers a welcome reminder that her historical fiction is equally fine."―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Outstanding.... Exploring the nature of faith and trust with heartrending intensity, Donoghue's superb novel will leave few unaffected."―Sarah Johnson, Booklist (starred review)

"Donoghue demonstrates her versatility by dabbling in a wide range of literary styles in this latest novel.... The closely imagined, intricately drawn story possesses many of the same alluring qualities as her bestseller, Room. .... Donoghue's engrossing novel is loaded with descriptions of period customs and 19th-century Catholic devotional objects and prayers...[and] asks daring questions about just how far some might go to prove their faith."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Donoghue is known for her bestselling novel, Room.... [But] she is also well versed in historical fiction. THE WONDER brings together the best of all, combining a gracefully tense, young voice with a richly detailed historical setting."―The Millions

"Readers of historical fiction will gravitate to this tale."―Mary Ann Gwinn, Seattle Times

"A riveting allegory about the trickle-down effect of trauma."―Megan O'Grady, Vogue

"Donoghue poses powerful questions about faith and belief all the while crafting a compelling story and an evocative portrait of 19th-century Irish provincial society."―Tom Beer, Newsday

"Donoghue's superb thriller will keep readers hanging on to every word, pondering how far one will go to prove her faith."―Liz Loerke, Real Simple

"Gripping."―Claire Stern, InStyle.com

"What at first seems a simple matter becomes far more-stick with it, the payoff is there."―Steph Opitz, Marie Claire

"Fresh and unusually lively historical fiction. [Donoghue's] latest novel brings together both her preoccupation with child peril and her gift for history."―Boris Kachka, Vulture

"A haunting novel about good vs. evil."―Brenda Janowitz, PopSugar

"Like [Room], THE WONDER explores a dark, insular, and rigidly controlled environment.... Donoghue's clever use of an outsider as narrator lets her explain anomalies to us-what a creepie is (a log stool) and why people tie rags to a tree (to hold their pain)-as she encounters them herself. But there is more to this mystery than superstitions and local dialect. Lib must decipher the private truths of Anna and her family, who have closed ranks in grief over the loss of a son. She must puzzle out the community itself and its contradictory beliefs in religion, science, and tradition. And Lib has her own sorrowful secrets, her own need for personal redemption. Donoghue deftly pairs the two stories, and as Lib uncovers the truth about Anna, she gradually owns the truth about herself."―Roxana Robinson, O, The Oprah Magazine

"Riveting.... Highly recommended."―Valerie Koehler, Literary Hub

"All spectacle and gothic horror and inevitably hard to put down."―Stassa Edwards, Jezebel

"Has that vivid, ripped-from-the-headlines feel that comes from an author's utter fascination with a real-world subject.... THE WONDER is deliciously gothic.... Dark and vivid, with complicated characters, this is a novel that lodges itself deep."―Steph Cha, USA Today, 3/4 stars

"Fodder for endless book club debates."―Meghan O'Gieblyn, Los Angeles Review of Books

"A fine work, adept and compelling in voice, plot, and moral complexity.... Donoghue deals out the cards with real skill."―Katherine A. Powers, Boston Globe

"Fascinating.... Like The Turn of the Screw, the novel opens irresistibly, when a young woman with a troubled past gets an enigmatic posting in a remote place.... Heartbreaking and transcendent and almost religious in itself."―Sarah Lyall, New York Times

"A locked-room mystery, set in atmospheric 19th-century Ireland and as spare, in its own way, as Room.... A fable as lean and discomfiting as Anna's dwindling body.... Donoghue keeps us riveted to Lib's perspective throughout.... Thanks to the complexity of Donoghue's ideas, there's plenty on which to ruminate."―Amy Gentry, Chicago Tribune

"Donoghue, a writer of great vitality and generosity-one gets the sense that she would gladly have her characters over for dinner, as long as they'd agree to eat-has been drawn repeatedly to the genre of historical fiction not so much to inhabit or reinterpret the past as to try to fit together its overlooked, missing pieces.... Fiction is small solace for history's grief, but it's one way to set the record straight."―Alexandra Schwartz, New Yorker

"A blazing historical novel."―Marion Winik, Newsday

A Perfect Storm
By Barbara Sutton
The Wonder by Emma Donoghue is a masterfully written mystery, and the detective is a young English nurse who has been hired to come in as an outside observer to determine the validity of the claim of a rural Irish family that their eleven year old daughter has taken no food for four months, and yet, is miraculously thriving. This nurse, Lib, expresses well the prejudices of the English towards the Irish and their beliefs. (The novel takes place not long after the end of the Great Potato Famine, and so there are intense feelings between the two cultures.) The focus of the story is on a young girl, Anna, who is seen locally as being specially blessed by God, and yet, as the story unfolds we come to see that she represents a perfect storm of pressures arising from devotion to God and religious fanaticism, love of family and family dysfunction. Lib, as a well-trained nurse, arrives with total skepticism, assuming that the child herself is perpetuating this hoax, but Anna's simplicity and purity of heart gradually win Lib over. The challenge then becomes: How to keep this child alive? As with all good mysteries, just about every character has ulterior motives of one kind or another to want the phenomena to be real... the priest, the doctor, the innkeeper, the parents. It is only the trust that slowly builds between Lib and Anna that creates a ray of hope. So much happens towards the end of the book that I was transfixed. The book gave me much to ponder about how children are influenced, for good or ill, by those around them. After finishing it, I immediately went back to read the last three chapters again so I could better appreciate all that contributed to Anna's dire situation. I happen to be a child psychologist, so these issue matter to me, but I think Donoghue's novel will have wide appeal. This is a very worthwhile read.

Emma Donoghue has done it again. Her newest book ...
By carilynp
Emma Donoghue has done it again. Her newest book THE WONDER is a hauntingly rich tale about a young girl in Ireland in the mid-1800s who has apparently been starving herself for months and surviving on faith alone. Most of the people of her village have deemed her a miracle. As a way to prove that the girl is truly what her family claims, several people from the town decide to bring in two nurses to watch over her for the course of two weeks, to see if she is in fact able to sustain life without nourishment. One of the nurses is a nun from a local parish whom the family knows. The other, from England, and trained under Florence Nightingale, and from the moment of her arrival, is already seen and treated as an outsider.

The English nurse, while quite skeptical of the situation, takes her duties quite seriously and beyond what she has been hired to do – mainly setting watch over the child to see if she takes in any food.

Donoghue’s master of dialect is astounding. It keeps the reader engaged and, as she did in her book ROOM, brings you so deep into the story, that it is hard to leave. The characters come alive and are so visual, their descriptions, their language lift them off the page. While reading it, you really feel for them or want to reach into the scene and shake some sense into them.

THE WONDER is a struggle between beliefs, right and wrong, and truth versus lies.

An Amazing Ride
By Sheri V
While reading this, the author managed to make my heart almost stop, made me cry, and made me laugh. I went along for a great ride and loved every second of it. It's not often I read a book that just grabs me from the first sentence and doesn't let go until the very last. This was one of those books.

I love the O'Hagan Way books and that they are all tied together with the Marius world. This is probably my new favorite of the O'Hagan stories. I will definitely read it again and I'm sure it will be just as entertaining and great the second time around.

I highly recommend this story for the emotion, the hot sex, and the sweet love story. I think Brio, Finn and Fergus will win your heart too!

LOVE THIS SERIES
By Amazon Customer
Loved the book, the character relationships was fantastic and while I can't say much without spoiling it for other readers I must say that is was dramatic and heart wrenching. The series as a whole though I find while very enjoyable but Joyee quite frequently changes things from book to book, like ages, whose born first (see Isaac and Dillon) and powers of vampires (Caleb in the first book can multiply himself, while Caleb in his book Caleb Footlong believes he has none, then later finds out that he can stop others from using their powers) while frustrating for those of us with photographic memory do not detract from the series. CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!
